The Devilfish
Wouldn’t you like to have a year like David “Devilfish” Ulliott’s 2003? He started off with a bang, bagging the 4th Annual World Poker Open in January to net a cool $589,990, then went on to place in the money twice at the Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Tour Classic in April and money again at the World Series of Poker in May. Add to that his WSOP wins in 1997 and 2003, his 1998 European Omaha Championship in Paris… the list goes on and on.
His journey to professional poker superstardom began at the age of 15 with strip-deck stud, the only poker game on offer in his northern England home. “Like everybody else,” says David, ”I started off by losing plenty of money at the game.” He must have been a fast learner because, “…now, if there's a game at all, I don't even get invited.” Branching out into pot-limit Omaha, the game of choice in British cardrooms and casinos, he eventually made the transition to Hold’em and tournament poker, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Thanks to his distinctive look and nickname, and his take-no-prisoners style of play, Dave has emerged as once of the best known and well-respected (and deeply feared!) professional players on the poker circuit today. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the devilfish is a Chinese culinary delicacy that’ll kill you if it’s not properly prepared. Forewarned is forearmed!
What's in a name?
Anyone familiar with the world of poker knows that many players have a nickname... something that distinguishes them from the field. Men "The Master" Ngyuen, Simon "Aces" Trumper, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, the list goes on. With a name like "The Devilfish," however, David Ulliott may take the prize for most unique.
For those who don't know, a devilfish is a poisonous fish, which will kill you if not prepared properly. Likewise, opponents who don't take care when facing The Devilfish down, may find themselves quickly short-stacked and out of the game.
Surprisingly, The Devilfish earned his nickname during the very first tournament he ever played in Vegas in January 1997, against The Master. With everyone shouting, "Go on The Master," Dave's mate yelled, "go on The Devilfish," a name attached to Dave by Stevie Young in Birmingham. The next day the headlines read "Devilfish devours the Master" and the rest, shall we say, is history.
