Carbon Poker is not among the oldest online poker operations, but the way things are going, it may soon be among the biggest. Carbon Poker has a whole bunch of things going for it. For starters, it accepts US traffic, a feature which has grown into one of near-mythical proportions since last April’s Black Friday. The US traffic has indeed picked up by quite a bit since Black Friday, and since then, Carbon Poker have added a bunch of new promotions to their offer too. Loyal players can now take part in monthly freerolls which give away prizes totaling $50k each month.

Large online poker operators always feature a massive weekend guarantees to create buzz and to attract scores of high profile players. Carbon Poker’s weekend guarantee is a $20k event which takes place on Sundays.

The problems that Carbon Poker is struggling with pretty much all stem from its relatively small player-base. Even though scores of new players joined up in the wake of Black Friday, for some reason, the room still seems to struggle a bit in this respect. The other shortcomings of the poker room only concern advanced poker players. Ring game and tournament data cannot be exported from the client to third party analysis programs, which means that statistical analysis and its strategy-implications are a bit of an Achilles’ heel for those who otherwise know how to take advantage of them.

The Merge Gaming client used by Carbon Poker is quite an excellent piece of online poker engineering. It features excellent graphics, smooth game-play and some pretty quirky extras like the rabbit hunt feature and the show one hole card feature. Players can communicate through a bunch of cartoony emoticons which are well put-together and quite funky indeed.

The functionality offered by the software is excellent. There’s quite a bit of information available on the players around the tables and the graphics are clean and crisp. Table mini-views are also available, which makes multi tabling a cinch.

The only downside of the vector-based graphics is that when players open 4 or more tables in mini-view, the text becomes a tad difficult to read. A nifty, albeit potentially counter-productive feature is the one that allows players to stick various ribbons and trophies to their name-tags, advertising their online poker achievements. While bragging a bit never hurts, revealing one’s strengths to the opposition isn’t always the best idea.

Overall, the Carbon Poker software is highly intuitive and easy to use for beginners and advanced players alike. The web interface, which allows for administrative operations like the changing of the password is also easy to use and straightforward.

The Carbon Poker game selection is nothing short of amazing. Besides the usual Holdem and Omaha variants and betting structures, the site offers Seven Card Stud (in both Hi and Hi/Lo versions) as well as all sorts of exotic poker variants such as Lowball, Badugi, Razz and 5-Card Draw.

The quality of the competition at Carbon Poker runs a wide gamut. There’s little traffic at the higher stakes so true red-blooded sharks are few and far between at the site, but there are some pretty skilled players at the lower limits. There are quite a few beginners at the site at all times too, so table selection will indeed make a huge difference when it comes to determining the overall quality of the opposition.

As far as actual traffic numbers are concerned: there are around 2.5k players at the tables in peak hours.
